Rise in The British Textile Industry

Rise in British Textile Manufacturing Reported

In 1980 there were a reported 800,000 jobs in the UK textile industry and that has been compressed to only 100,000 today. This has been largely blamed on today’s market share dominance of China, the Indian subcontinent and other parts of Asia.

However, a recent study has given the UK a small hope of some sort of recovery. This month The Financial Times have reported employment in British garment-making was up 21 per cent year on year in the second quarter of 2013.

It was concluded that short lead times have helped reduce the risk of markdowns for retailers. UK companies hope that by sourcing more locally, they could experience similar success to Spain’s Inditex, the world’s biggest clothing retailer by sales, which produces 50% of its garments in Spain, Morocco and Portugal.

The emerging revival in UK manufacturing - dubbed the ‘march of the makers’ by George Osborne - has taken longer than hoped but the latest figures are encouraging. Perfect Labels-Lanyards have been one of the leading supplies of Customised Garment Labels to the UK over the past 15 years and are naturally delighting by this recent good news. We still offer a guaranteed Cheapest Price You Pay in England with a 7 day standard lead-time for sampling your Garment Labels, while bulk production is about 10 – 14 days.

Let’s hope for continued progress and we wish all of our customers a wonderful 2014!
